Robots are probably one of the best things about science fiction. From brutal killers to protectors; they’re a staple of the genre. Below we’ll go through ten of the coolest robots in science fiction.
Optimus Prime (Transformers)
Hero to an entire generation. Prime is at the top of the list of most fanboy’s favorite robot lists, and for good reason. He’s just awesome. Even when destroyed by the horrid Bayformer character design; Prime still kicked ass. Hasbro made a monumental mistake in the 80’s when they killed him off in the good Transformers movie, but you can’t keep Optimus Prime dead for long (as his twenty-minute death in Revenge of the Fallen showed!)
Data (Star Trek: The Next Generation)
TNG’s Data began, in fan’s eyes, as that show’s answer to Spock. But over the years he evolved into one of the best Trek characters ever. It’s too bad he had to die in such a stupid way in Nemesis, but that movie shouldn’t even be considered canon anyways.
No matter how much you may dislike one installment of the Terminator series, you can’t deny how awesome the original T-800 endoskeleton design is. Stan Winston’s awesome talent for scifi creature design will really be missed.
Foul-mouthed, hard drinking, and just leaking cool out of his joints; Bender is one of the coolest robots ever created.
HAL 9000 (2001: A Space Odyssey)
HAL is one robot (well technically, he’s a computer) you don’t want to mess with. Piss him off and he’ll toss you out of an airlock.
HK-47 (Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic)
Sort of a precursor to Bender; HK-47 was the best thing about the KOTOR series. His sarcastic cruelty made playing through the games entertaining.
Robbie the Robot (Forbidden Planet)
One of the original killer robot bodyguards in scifi; Robbie has gone on to become something of an icon of classic Science Fiction with his image being used to promote the image of the “old school” scifi robots.
Robocop himself was more of a cyborg, but ED-209 was the real cool robot in that original movie. Blowing away that board room was one of the highlights of the first Robocop.
IG-88 (The Empire Strikes Back)
He’s a robot, and a bounty hunter. What’s cooler than that? People love Boba Fett, but IG-88 was the cooler bounty hunter in The Empire Strikes Back.
Gort (The Day the Earth Stood Still)
Gort can destroy the entire Earth. While he appeared in the 2008 remake as a giant CG creation, the original robot (and movie) is still the best. Just don’t forget the magic words: “Klaatu barada nikto”
