Looking at Serenity and Scott Pilgrim, the one thing that really killed those movies was that Universal did so many free screenings that every fan who wanted to see them already saw it two or three times for FREE prior to it coming out in theaters. With movies that niche, they really killed any chance they had at making any money at all. Snakes on the Plane was hurt by being based on a third tier SNL skit, and Kick Ass was hurt by controversy.
