For the first time since Stargate SG-1 premiered on Showtime in 1997 there will not be a new Stargate series on television. The SyFy Channel has decided to not renew Stargate Universe for a third season. While the series has had abysmal ratings, this is just yet another sign that the SyFy channel is no longer the “SciFi Channel” as its last true scifi series has been cancelled following the end of Caprica.
There is another Battlestar Galactica backdoor pilot movie coming, but after the death of the Stargate franchise, will there even be an audience for it on the channel? Honestly the channel has been on a steady decline since the cancellation of Farscape. Battlestar was a fluke, and even then the channel sort of forced the creators to end it early. Even the long rumored (and even once advertised) Red Mars miniseries is nowhere to be found. Stick a fork in SyFy. It’s done.
