Star Wars: The Old Republic – Not as good as Rift?

Stalk us on Facebook and Twitter or grab the RSS Feed

If you’ve been following The Old Republic for a while, you’d probably know that it’s currently in a highly secretive closed beta test. This beta has the participants bound by a very strict NDA that doesn’t really allow them to say anything outside of admitting that they are participating in the test. Well at least one tester has decided to speak out in his own way, although he was very careful to not completely break the NDA.

Yogcast, which is a pretty popular video podcast on Youtube, recently provided their impressions of the fourth Rift beta event. At the end of the video, at about 13:52, he talks about another unreleased MMO that he’s played but can’t talk about. His friend begins to hum the Star Wars theme when he explains that it’s basically not as good as Rift and that he’ll be picking up Rift instead.

You can view the whole video below, but this is another example of how people need to really try to control their hype for The Old Republic or risk a disappointment the likes of which Star Wars fans have never seen.

You could dress this game up, but when it comes down to it Rift is exactly like WoW. You can’t really kill WoW with a copy. You need something new.

RIFT is exactly like WoW?? Uhhhh what? You are 1 of 3 things.
      1. Blind.
      2. Stupid.
      3. Blind and stupid.
RIFT, is very different from WoW, looks, sounds, classes, you name it. AND..its much MUCH more fun too.

I wish there were more guild wars 2 videos out there to really see what direction MMO’s are headed. Rift seems to combine the best of WOW and WAR. Star wars just seems lost.

I always thought Furious Fan boys were a joke, anyhow if you listen he is comparing the graphics between the two games, thats it. Since there art styls are completely different and Rift is closer to release then SWTOR, apples and oranges guys.
I played Rift and enjoyed it, but SWTOR gets my sub, they just have more going for it and since when does realistic graphics make a game million, hmm WoW anyone?

Nice video, I wouldnt worry about the TOR reference, just 1 persons opinion. I know a few people that would say the same thing about wow vs other games but that dont seem to stop millions from injoying that game either ;p

Rift shares the same engine like warhammer, and everybody knows warhammer`s pve is bad, its tacky and quiet frankly the engine cant do all that good pve. Rift is just like any other mmorpg, you go to a quest giver, you dont read the text, you just do it to level up. What is mmorpg about that ? xD.

    @ Micke
i played Rift beta 3 and thought the PvE is really good, also played WAR from beta to a couple of months past release. Rift is nothing like WAR PvE wise though I think rift has its own issues the engine does not have much to do with the content, apart from how smooth it runs etc. Rift is smooth as hell and I believe it will have a good launch but as far as longevity goes i am unsure.

Exactly. The amount of blind hype that is in display over TOR will ensure that it’s disappointment will eclipse the Prequels a hundred fold.

The one and only place I have read anything bad about TOR is on this shitty site. I think that says it all! Good day!

I am so sick of dragons and wizards and dwarfs and trolls that even if TOR turned out to be absolute garbage, i would still play it over the WoW copy you’re trying to sell everybody on.

In all honesty the only thing i hear anybody complaning about (other then this guy’s graphics complaints, which is just stupid) is the pvp system in the game, which leads me to believe that they are a bunch of kids who are mad they cant go around lurking and griefing and “pwning n00bs” , which does not even really come onto my radar as pvp should be a secondary part of an mmo, not the main attraction.

So rage on fanboy! I won’t be returning to your sad excuse for a gaming blog anytime soon, and im pretty sad i wasted my time finding this on google.

    Hey guys

Just wanted to say Rift blows goats (Obvious WoW clone with very little to differentiate itself from WoW) and that if Rift sucks, then SWTOR must blow hard

Regardless i’ll be trying SW:TOR over Rift anyday, went into the beta and sighed hard when I realized how much of a clone it really was

Its something for WoW players who are sick of WoW but want to play WoW if you get what I mean. You see em trying every new MMO that comes out.

I’ve played Wow for 4 yrs or so and finally got tired of it, I recently tried Rifts beta and felt in the start it was a bit like Wow but honestly what can you expect…your lev 1 and just started.. How epic and different can you possibly want it? Anyways I’ve played Rift beta till lev 24 and so far its great, the start of Rift is a bit boring and yes like wow but around lev 7 or so it does a HUGE turn around, game play is a lot different then Wow and open world activities are amazing, closing rifts, stopping invasions on towns etc. PVP is also very nice and smooth in this game which im a huge fan of. Try not to judge till you try or see further and more in detail gameplay…. watch the first 6 levs of Wow and lets see how great and exciting it is. :P

Hmm dosent matter if they change Rift spell names and effect graphics its still like WoW like i see and SWTOR too. They should move on and start making sandbox style game like Lord oOf The Rings new game episode will be in 2 years. You have to aim were you hit or shoot with spell, bow and you can dodge, block or even parry. Luck based parry dodge and etc. is boring.

lol funny how someone is raging how this game isn’t like wow because of world events, this game is almost exactly like vanilla wow, played the beta for about an hour laughing my butt off. Sure swtor may have a bit of the same questing system but the presentation is alot different, and with SW weapons combined with space fighting I doubt it will be anywhere close to the same style of game as WoW and Rift.
