It’s been reported on a variety of websites that Spanish actor Javier Bardem is in talks to play Roland Deschain in Ron Howard’s adaptation of The Dark Tower.
Here is a link to Sharmin T.M. Kent’s story which appeared in The Atlantic on January 31, 2011.
For those unfamiliar with Bardem, his work spans Spanish television and cinema as well as mainstream Hollywood productions. American audiences will be most familiar with his Oscar winning performance in The Cohen Brothers’ “No Country for Old Men.” He also appeared in Michael Mann’s “Collateral” in 2004. That same year Bardem played Ramon Sampedro in “The Sea Inside;” the true life story of a quadriplegic who fought a 29 year legal battle to end his life. The story focuses on Ramon as the axis upon on which a number of characters turn. The film explores Ramon’s unique relationships with his brother and sister-in-law, his lawyer Julia, and a young woman named Rosa. While The Sea Inside” is not for the faint hearted, it’s an incredible story.
The breadth and depth of Bardem’s work is unmatched. I’m excited and hopeful that he’ll be part of Howard’s effort to bring Stephen King’s epic to screen.
