It’s my opinion that 1998 was the greatest year ever for games. While a lot of denizens of video game message boards may not agree with this, as they weren’t born yet, that year had more heavy hitting games that launched legendary franchises (and genres) than any year that followed. 1998 gave us Resident Evil 2, Final Fantasy Tactics, Rainbow Six, Pokemon, Unreal, Metal Gear Solid, Grim Fandango, Starsiege: Tribes, Fallout 2, Baldur’s Gate, StarCraft (and its expansion), Half-Life, and just in time for Thanksgiving; The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time. The beta test for EverQuest also begun in late 1998.
While it’s true that Ocarina of Time has been re-released on the GameCube and the Wii in the past, the upcoming 3DS version features updated graphics and some new features. Nintendo has released a new trailer for the game to take us all back to 1998:
