One of the most famous, and one of my favorite, science fiction franchises is back and both critically and financially successful. Rise of the Planet of the Apes took over the box office this weekend with a nice $54 million. While it was lower than the Tim Burton opening ten years ago, that one was very hyped and front-loaded.
Rise of the Planet of the Apes really came out of nowhere (after having working titles such as Ceasar and Rise of the Apes), and ended up being embraced by critics and fans alike. Its box office is similar to that of X-Men: First Class earlier this summer, and it’s pretty much guaranteed to get a sequel. Hopefully the new Apes franchise will last as long as the original, without any Tim Burton stinkers in it.
