IDW’s recently-launched Star Trek comic series, which will re-tell Original Series stories with the Abramsverse crew, will actually turn into a prequel to the second movie. StarTrek.com has an interview with the writers, and they compare it to the “Countdown” comics that led into the 2009 Trek reboot:
How much, if at all, will what you’re doing ultimately tie into the next film and its story?
Johnson: Very much so, much in the way that the “Countdown†series set up backstory for the last movie. It’s fantastic to have Bob’s input, because he can steer us clear of story elements that might conflict with what’s coming up in the next movie, and we can lay in subtle clues to what’s coming up so that once you see the new movie you can go back and see how it evolved in the comics.
“Countdown” was a really awesome series, complete with Captain Data in command of the Enterprise. It set up the backstory for the reboot, and elements of it even made it into Trek canon as Data’s uniform design became the basis for the core uniforms for Starfleet in Star Trek Online.
The first issue of IDW’s Star Trek is on shelves now, and tells the first part of “Where No Man Has Gone Before”, complete with an Abramsverse Gary Mitchell.
