This past week saw two of the biggest games of the year release, and one of them is the clear winner with PC gamers. On Tuesday Modern Warfare 3 hit stores, while The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim arrived on Friday. This weekend, Skyrim crushed concurrent user records on Steam; putting up more than double the players as Modern Warfare 3. As both games use Steamworks, the numbers include people who bought the games at retail; so this isn’t limited to pure digital downloads.
This really shouldn’t surprise anyone. Modern Warfare 3 is being attacked for basically being Modern Warfare 2.5, Battlefield 3 is enthralling PC FPS gamers, and Skyrim is one of the best RPGs ever made. Skyrim is so good that if you chose that over Modern Warfare 3, you really wouldn’t be regretting the decision at all. Even just a couple hours into the game you’ll become hopelessly addicted and want to spend every free moment exploring the gorgeous open world that Bethesda created for their fifth entry into the long-running series.
Naturally the story is very different on the consoles, with Modern Warfare 3 dominating Xbox Live and PSN. It seems like console gamers still have a bit of growing up to do.
