It’s New Years, and with everyone looking back at the year that was it’s time to look forward to next year. 2012 promises to be a geekgasm of awesomeness in theaters with three really huge movies coming out that are destined to be fanboy classics. Here are the ten movies we’re looking forward to checking out in 2012.
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

Despite some complaints from whiny purists, Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings adaptation has gone on to become one of the Holy Trilogies. With Jackson, and the same creative team, returning to Middle-Earth for two Hobbit movies; the first one will definitely be one of the biggest movies of 2012 when it’s released in December, and it’ll likely see a bunch of Oscar nominations just as the previous three movies did.
Prometheus

Prometheus is going to be huge for two reasons: Ridley Scott is returning to science fiction, and he’s doing it with a prequel to Alien that finally explores who the Space Jockeys were. Everything that’s come out of the movie so far looks awesome. It’ll take some kind of cosmic disaster to make this one disappoint.
The Dark Knight Rises

Superhero movies don’t have the best track record when it comes to a third entry in a series, so hopefully The Dark Knight Rises breaks the trend and ends the Nolan trilogy on a high note. If they really do make Knightfall part of the storyline, it could very well be extremely awesome.
