After losing more than a million World of Warcraft players, and a recent poll that says 3 to 4 million may jump ship to The Old Republic, could Activision-Blizzard be scared? Everyone’s favorite evil overlord Bobby Kotick doesn’t sound like it, as he recently downplayed the potential success of The Old Republic:
“Lucas is going to be the principal beneficiary of the success of Star Wars,” Kotick said. “We’ve been in business with Lucas for a long time and the economics will always accrue to the benefit of Lucas, so I don’t really understand how the economics work for Electronic Arts.”
“If you look at the history of the people investing in an MMO and achieving success, it’s a small number,” Kotick said.
While it’s true Lucasarts will get a large cut of the subscription numbers for The Old Republic, we think it’ll hurt WoW a lot more than Kotick thinks…
