While we know The Avengers will be fighting Loki in theaters next month, the actual race that makes up his army has remained a mystery. Despite very strong evidence of them being Skrulls, Marvel has denied that up and down. So what race will Loki be bringing to Earth to fight our Mightiest Heroes? There are some theories as to who exactly they are.
The aliens in the latest TV spot definitely look like Badoons. These are lizard-like aliens who do look a lot like Skrulls. They typically have green skin and are often drawn with large ears. Aside from not having a large wrinkled chin, they often look very Skrull-like in the comics.
Another theory based on the TV spot is that they’re Korbinites. The race Beta Ray Bill comes from does have a connection to Asgard as their empire was wiped out by the Asgardian demon Surtur. Loki has knowledge of them, so that’s a possibility there. It also opens the way for Beta Ray Bill to appear in Thor 2 and finally give Sif the love interest fans of the comic expect.
This one is stretching it a bit and comes from a theory posed by Latino Review based on a spy report that called the villains “EXTREMELY dangerous” and their belief that Extremis will be the basis for Iron Man 3. Based on the latest footage from the movie, the army looks a lot more alien than just guys in high tech armor.
One fleeting rumor early on in the production of The Avengers was that Thanos would make some kind of cameo appearance. Based on that, some people believe the army is actually made up of Deviants, which would pave the way for Thanos to be the main villain in the sequel. With Doctor Strange rumored to be in the second Avengers movie, it would make some sense to go a more mythical way with the story for the follow-up.
Then again, they could be redesigned Skrulls/Chitauri. The board game for the movie includes Skrulls as the villains, the movie action figures include Skrulls, the cancelled THQ tie-in game featured Skrulls, and the early leaked script featured Skrulls very heavily.
