On February 1st, EA proudly announced that Star Wars: The Old Republic had reached 1.7 million subscribers. Now nearly a month later EA has revealed new subscriber numbers…and they haven’t changed. There was no increase or decrease in the number of people playing TOR, which technically isn’t a good thing for such a big game that was just released.
VentureBeat has the news from EA, who did try to put a positive spin on no increase in new subscribers by saying that a vast majority of them are actually paying customers and no longer on their 30 day trial.
Still, compared to WoW with its 10 million players, The Old Republic is going to need to do something to pull more players in. If it peaks at just 1.7 million, MMO history has shown that unless something drastic happens (like Free 2 Play), numbers will likely just go down. Hopefully that doesn’t happen.
