Despite rumors, it seems like James Cameron’s recent one-man dive to Challenger Deep would really have nothing to do with Avatar 2. Rumors were flying around that he was shooting 3D footage for use in the movie down there, and while he did film a lot of footage for a future National Geographic film; none of it is headed to Avatar 2. He talked about it with MTV:

“Completely spurious rumor. People try to connect the dots, right? If they think of you first as a filmmaker, then all of the exploration stuff must be so that you can be a better filmmaker. Wrong conclusion,” he said. “That’s like [saying] ‘A frog with no legs is deaf.’ ”
