At the London Comic Con, BioWare revealed their upcoming plans for The Old Republic’s 1.3 patch and that includes a new free trial. Unlike the limited trial they’ve done in the past, this new trial won’t be limited to specific weekends. It will be level limited, but once you subscribe you’ll be able to continue on right from where you left off. They are also planning free server transfers, which should help some of the players on relatively empty servers to move to one where they can actually find a group.
Darth Hater has the rundown of all the news out of the con, including a full transcription of the Q&A. The second question asked in the Q&A will be disappointing to those who are running the superior operating system, as BioWare now says they aren’t working on a Mac version of the game:
Q. Hi, my name is Don. Is there going to be a Macintosh version of this coming out any time soon?
A. I am going to be honest. We’re not working on one. We know that it works quite well in Bootcamp but it has not been a priority up until now. But we always listen to our customers or to would be customers. It does not come up as a priority but we are expanding the market for the game, we are releasing in new markets in new territories. It would make some sense to release on a new platform but I am not aware of development at this time.
While it’s very disappointing (and means I’ll probably never play the game again), it makes sense given the current state of the game. BioWare has recently laid off a large portion of their staff for the game, and it’s likely they simply no longer have the manpower to devote to porting the game to a better platform.
