I used to do this every week, but stopped for various reasons. But now that Blu-Ray has pretty much completely replaced DVDs in terms of new releases, and to mark the release of John Carter on disc, I decided to bring it back if only to let everyone know that one of the best science fiction movies in years is finally out on disc. I’ve also decided to list the big games out this week as most of us are gamers as well.
As with before you can click the links to be taken to the disc on Amazon, which is the way I buy all my movies and games because I’ve just become too used to not having to leave the house to buy a Blu-Ray anymore.
Blu-Rays -

Forget Hollywood’s crusade to crucify the film prior to its release, which kicked off a campaign of negativity prior to it opening and caused it to bomb in the US. John Carter is some of the most fun you could have with a movie this year. I’d easily say that so far in 2012, it’s my #2 after The Avengers. It’s out in a four-disc Blu-Ray3D/Blu-Ray/DVD/Digital Copy pack and a two-disc set of just the Blu-Ray and DVD.
Journey 2 The Mysterious Island

Despite a few failed attempts, I didn’t make it to see this in the theater earlier in the year. But I do want to check it out because the first movie, Journey to the Center of the Earth, was actually a pretty fun adaptation of the book. My favorite part of the original was how they had a copy of the book and were using it as a guide through the center of the earth. I don’t know if the sequel has anything like that, but it does have The Rock in it and it can’t possibly be worse than Doom.

Unlike the other scifi series Spielberg was involved with last season, Falling Skies wasn’t cursed by the Brannon Braga stank, which means it’s pretty good! The second season is kicking off shortly on TNT so that means the short first season is hitting disc. This is a pretty cool alien invasion series with some really decent effects and great alien designs.
Games -
This week is E3 week, so there actually aren’t any games out. Actually, that’s not true. Namco is finally releasing Inversion. The game has had some…troubles…and Namco is just sending it out do die as everyone will be distracted by E3. I don’t think it’d even be worth a rental.
Upcoming Big Releases -
The Avengers 10-Disc Limited Edition

We’ve known for a while that The Avengers would hit disc on September 25th, but now they’ve released the 10-disc limited edition set that’s going to go for about $150. It’ll include all of the movies leading up to The Avengers (Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2, Thor 3D, and Captain America 3D) as well as Joss Whedon’s masterpiece and an exclusive extras disc called the Phase One Archives. It’ll be enclosed in a collector’s box which is a replica of the metal briefcase that carried the Cosmic Cube along with some yet-to-be-revealed extras. The standard Blu-Ray release is also up for pre-order in both 3D and 2D flavors as well.

Even though it doesn’t hit theaters until Friday, the Blu-Ray for Prometheus is already up for pre-order. Over the weekend, Fox kicked off a promotion where the first 5,000 people to pre-order it get a $10 movie cash coupon to see the movie. I do not know if they’ve hit that number already, but the promo page is still live so it’s possible that it’s still going on. The Blu-Ray comes out in October.
