Following the success of Avengers and its alien invasion storyline, it seems as if audiences are open to more cosmic movie adventures based on comics. Yet, DC’s Green Lantern fizzled in the box office and it doesn’t look like we’ll be going back to Oa for more adventures with the Corps any time soon. That doesn’t seem to have deterred either DC or Marvel as it looks like the two comic publishers will be bringing the cosmic comics to the big screen, and in the process giving us SciFi epics we haven’t seen in a long time.
The first is obviously Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. This is the most “Star Wars” of all of the possible comic adaptations, and from the team line up (including Star Lord, Drex, Gamora, Groot, and Rocket frackin Raccoon!); Marvel appears to be going the full scifi route with the movie. With Thanos obviously being the villain in the next Avengers movie, the only force that stands behind him and Earth are the Guardians so it’s the perfect movie to lead into The Avengers 2. Gamora is even Thanos’ adoptive daughter, although who knows if they’ll include that part of her character in the story.
Next up is Lobo. It’s been rumored for a while that The Rock would be playing the intergalactic bounty hunter, and he just recently confirmed on his twitter feed that it’s true. The movie is being worked on by Joel Silver and Brad Peyton, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see some kind of announcement or something about it at the 2013 San Diego Comic Con to go up against anything Marvel may be showing about Guardians. Hopefully they stick to the gritty, violent, and funny scifi roots of Lobo and don’t have him stomping around Earth.
So now’s a good time to be both a scifi fan, and a comics fan.
