SDCC: Wreck It Ralph is Awesome

As part of the Disney panel, which featured Tim Burton with Frankenweenie and Sam Raimi’s Oz, the video game tribute animated movie Wreck It Ralph was shown off. Director Rich Moore was joined by Sarah Silverman (in Daisy Dukes) and John C. Reilly on stage where they showed ten minutes from the movie. First impressions after that ten minutes? This movie is going to be awesome.

Instead of showing just the first ten minutes, what they showed was scenes compiled from different parts of the movie. There’s the introduction, which is likely from the beginning, and then the entire support group scene from the trailer. Zangief’s lines here are hilarious, and when Kano performs his heart-ripping Fatality on the Zombie; we may be looking at the first PG-13 Disney animated film. At the end of the scene it’s revealed that the support group takes place in the home square of the ghosts from the Pac Man game board.

From there, Ralph moves into Game Central Station and the background is filled with video game characters. This is a scene that will need to be paused on Blu-Ray to take in, but a quick glance shows Sonic talking on a PSA board, Pong, Chun Li, Cammy, and Paperboy. From there we’re quickly introduced to the Hero’s Duty FPS part of the movie and the cart racer level where Sarah Silverman’s character is introduced.

In the Q&A afterwards, the director was asked about characters they couldn’t get the rights to and he sort of jokingly hinted that Mario and Luigi may have been an issue. That’s strange as Bowser is in the movie, as is Sonic.

Despite that, the ten minutes they showed cemented that this movie is going to be an absolute must-see for any gamer.
