They should really rename DC to “Pandering Comics”, it wouldn’t take more than an intern and a half hour with Photoshop to change the “DC” logo to “PC”. The latest example of DC pandering to a specific group to get a PR bump comes from the pages of Green Lantern as the stars are aligned to replace Hal Jordan with “Baz”, an Arab-American Lantern with a costume as stupid as his name.

This comes after DC quickly changed Alan Scott, the original Green Lantern, to a gay character in a knee-jerk reaction to Marvel marrying off Northstar. The problem with what DC did was that Northstar has been gay in the comics since the 90s, and Marvel didn’t change the character at all. Alan Scott, on the other hand, was married with two superhero children (one who was always gay).

The Green Lantern change feels like a reaction to Marvel’s new Ultimate Spider-Man. Last year, Marvel killed off Peter Parker in the Ultimate-verse and replaced him with Miles Morales who is a half-Hispanic, half-African America thirteen year old. He has different powers than Peter, as he was bitten by a different variety of radioactive spider, and his costume is really awesome and it was given to him by the Samuel L. Jackson Nick Fury of the Ultimate universe. Miles has become pretty popular, and they’ve recently had him meet the real Peter Parker.

Baz, on the other hand, just feels like DC scrambling to do something similar in order to pander to people and avoid more attacks at their Comic Con panels that their books are diverse enough. It doesn’t help that his costume is total shit and looks like a rejected design from Kick Ass.

Also, what the hell does a Green Lantern need with a real gun? He can make a damn construct of anything he wants!
