Recently, Marvel’s Kevin Feige spoke to MTV and was asked about new Hulk movies. He said nothing would happen until after The Avengers 2, but both Planet Hulk and World War Hulk were good stories. That made fanboys perk up, as if Marvel is thinking about doing Planet Hulk and World War Hulk in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, they’d have a very awesome duo of Hulk movies on their hands that would cause fans to go nuts.
But how could the storyline play out in the MCU?
In the comics, it was Iron Man (as part of the Illuminati group) who decides to trick Hulk into going into space only to be jettisoned and abandoned on a remote planet. As Whedon brilliantly did in The Avengers, he made Stark and Banner the “Science Bros”, so having him trick Banner wouldn’t fit with how they’re handling the characters in the movie. That’s fine by me, as I love the idea of Banner and Stark teamed up. It’s long overdue.
Yet, that doesn’t stop the possibility of Planet Hulk from making its way to live action (there was an animated version about two years ago).
One thing that could happen in The Avengers 2 is that Hulk does lose control at one point when they’re fighting off the Thanos threat and does something like, say, trash Las Vegas. That could cause S.H.I.E.L.D. begin to hatch the plan to get Hulk off the planet, setting up Planet Hulk and making Avengers 2 the first in a Hulk trilogy.
As for Planet Hulk itself, its likely one element from the animated movie would make its way over and that’s probably Beta Ray Bill. It’s doubtful Marvel will recover the rights to Silver Surfer prior to that, so they would need to put a different character in the arena, and Bill would fit. Then again, they could get Silver Surfer back and that would be a pretty awesome introduction/cameo for him.
