Friday marks the IMAX re-release of Raiders of the Lost Ark, and if you’re any sort of geek you’re probably excited. But you’ll want to be careful before heading down to your local “IMAX” theater to check out the movie. Over the last few years, many large theaters quickly converted regular theaters into “IMAX” theaters by cramming a slightly larger screen and better speakers in an existing auditorium. These aren’t “real” IMAX theaters, and people tend to call them “FoMAX”. Unfortunately, if you want to see Raiders on IMAX, it may be one one of these screens.
In Southern California, there are only a couple of true full size IMAX theaters, but a ton of fake IMAX theaters. Imagine my crushing disappointment when I checked not just Fandango, but IMAX’s own site, to discover that the real full-size IMAX theaters will not be showing Raiders over the one week it’ll be out in the format. Instead, they’re going to continue to show The Dark Knight Rises.
A once in a lifetime IMAX experience will be ruined by having to watch it on a fake IMAX screen. If you know what real and fake IMAX theaters exist in your area, be sure to check to see if the real one is actually going to be showing Raiders.
