After more than a decade away from gaming, Chris Roberts is brining epic space combat back to PC gaming on a scale we’ve only dreamed of. Roberts has finally revealed his “Star Citizen”, which will be an open world online space sim with a structured campaign mode called Squadron 47. It’ll combine all of the elements of Wing Commander, Privateer, and Freespace in one game where the universe will be persistent and players can even make an impact. One example given is if someone is a big enough explorer and discovers a new region of space, the jump gate there will be named after him.
As part of the reveal, Roberts launched the game’s first official site here. Instead of trying to fund the game through Kickstarter, he’s funding it through the site itself and hopes to raise between $2 million and $4 million, and if that happens he has investors who will add to it if there shows to be enough demand for a new space sim.
I don’t know about you, but I’d kill to play this game right now. It’ll be running on CryEngine3 and while it isn’t due until 2014, those who contribute will apparently have some kind of access to the game in an Alpha Test next year.
