Marvel Returns to SciFi in a Big Way, But Where’s Silver Surfer?

With Guardians of the Galaxy set for August 2014 in theaters, Marvel definitely needs to reintroduce the characters for people unfamiliar with Rocket Raccoon and gang. While they recently showed up in the newbie-friendly series Avengers Assemble, they’ve been out of the mainstream Marvel Universe for a while. That’ll all change in February when Marvel is relaunching both Guardians of the Galaxy and Nova to bring Marvel Cosmic to the Marvel Now! initiative.

Guardians has been rumored for a long time, and just as the rumors stated; it’ll be written by Brian Michael Bendis with art from the awesome Steve McNiven. The team will be the movie team: Star Lord, Gamora, Groot, Drax, and Rocket Raccoon. The big surprise is that Bendis is adding Iron Man to the team, complete with his own space armor. Marvel describes them as the team that fights threats too big for the Avengers. Nova will be written by Jeph Loeb with Ed McGuinness art, and will likely reference AvX in some way as Nova made his big Marvel return in that crossover.

Hopefully this new focus on cosmic books means that a new on-going Silver Surfer comic is on its way. Marvel needs the Surfer, and with Defenders ending its run in December; he won’t be in any books!
