I personally encountered an issue on my four-disc set for Prometheus last week. I began do to a little research to see if anyone else was running into the problems, and I did find some message board posts about it. So on Saturday I reached out to Bill Hunt of The Digital Bits, and it seems as if he’s also heard of the issue; so it’s likely a mildly widespread issue that so far seems to only be affecting certain batches of the four-disc version of Prometheus (the one with the BD3D disc) and likely only from certain retailers. Most of the bad copies seem to be coming from Best Buy, but other retailers may be affected.
Basically the problem pops up in the last half of the movie, when macroblocking appears all over the screen and on certain players it will completely crash and shut down the player after a while. I’ve seen reports of this happening on a wide range of players from multiple manufacturers, and as those affected by the problem purchased replacement discs at different stores that didn’t have the problem; it definitely is a manufacturing problem.
As Fox hasn’t initiated a replacement program for the discs, the only thing those of us affected by the defect can do is try to exchange it where we got it or call Fox’s customer service at 1-888-223-4369.
