If you’re a hardcore prequel hater, you’d better sit down. An art critic has declared that the third prequel, Revenge of the Sith, is the best work of art in recent history. This is based on the last part of the movie, where Anakin turns to the Dark Side and the operatic way George Lucas showed his final fall. The declaration was made by art critic Camille Paglia in an interview with Vice:
Yes, the long finale of Revenge of the Sith has more inherent artistic value, emotional power, and global impact than anything by the artists you name. It’s because the art world has flat-lined and become an echo chamber of received opinion and toxic over-praise. It’s like the emperor’s new clothes—people are too intimidated to admit what they secretly think or what they might think with their blinders off.
As someone who thinks Revenge of the Sith is actually better than Return of the Jedi, this opinion isn’t shocking to me. But that doesn’t stop the prequel haters from freaking the hell out that someone in such a position could have a positive opinion on something they despise so much.
