Back in 1980 when The Empire Strikes Back played on cinema screens in the UK and Australia, it included a 20-minute Sword & Sorcery short film titled Black Angel. The film was directed by Star Wars art director Roger Christian and made with financial help from George Lucas. After it’s brief run with Empire outside the US, the film was believed to be lost, but according to Wired an archivist at Universal found it and it will likely be released:
The movie’s gorgeous art design and cinematography influenced many Arthurian myth films that followed, from Excalibur to Legend. Christian slowed and elongated the action scenes with a technique called step-printing, which Lucas then used for a lightsaber battle in Empire. “Fans had rarely seen images like this on the big screen,” Christian says.
Before you get too excited, Christian went on to great fame and fortune by directing…Battlefield Earth.
