Superman: Unbound Trailer

brainiacIf you picked up the amazing Dark Knight Returns, Part 2 this week you may have seen the special feature on the disc talking about Superman: Unbound. This looks to be the next DCU animated feature to hit disc later this year, as Warner/DC doesn’t seem to be talking about Flashpoint yet – and it’s known that one is coming as some of the voice actors have talked about working on it. But before Flashpoint, we’ll be getting Superman: Unbound which makes sense as they’ll likely want to tie in something with the Man of Steel hype this summer.

There has been a rumor floating around that in Man of Steel Brainaic would be responsible for the destruction of Krypton, with this being done to set him up as the villain in the sequel. Now, Brainiac has been involved in Krypton’s destruction for a while in the comics, and they even were going with that angle in Superman Lives back in 1997. If Brainaic is mentioned in any way in Man of Steel, this new animated movie would make a lot of sense as a tie-in.

Superman: Unbound is loosely based on a five-issue Brainiac story that Geoff Johns did in Action Comics #866-870. They’ve said that they’re expanding the story a bit, but those five issues are the basis for it. If you want to read it before the movie comes out, all five issues are available digitally on comiXology (about $10 total) or if you prefer to read your comics in print, there’s a trade paperback available.
