With Independence Day 2 set for July 3rd, 2015; it’s immediately become my second-most anticipated movie of that summer. After Star Wars, that’s the one sequel I’m most interested in. Sure Avengers 2 will be awesome, but by then it will have been nineteen years since the first Independence Day, and there are so many things that the sequel could show us. Here are the top five things we want to see in an Independence Day 2:
Alien/Human Hybrid Tech
Roland Emmerich has already discussed a little bit about the alternate timeline that the sequel is set in. It’ll be twenty years after the first movie, but in those years the humans have tried to make use of the alien technology, which caused society to develop differently than it really did. I want to see fighter jets with jury-rigged alien tech on them.
Most major cities were destroyed in the first movie. In the past twenty years, did they rebuild all of them? Build new ones? Are the new cities futuristic looking with more hybrid technology? Or are they just rebuilt as is (to save on budget costs)? The fate of the destroyed cities is one big question that twenty years of time should deliver an answer for.
At the end of the first movie, when we get to see the inside of the mothership, there are thousands of ground troops ready to invade the planet. In theory, the way the aliens work is they wipe out cities and defenses with their giant ship weapons, and then send ground troops to clean up the rest of the planet’s resistance. We never got to see actual ground combat, so maybe we will in the sequel.
Mix of Practical & CG Effects
The original ID4 came at a very interesting time where practical effects were making way for CG, and due to the mix of practical and CG in the movie; the effects still hold up nearly twenty years later. Movies like The Lord of the Rings and Pacific Rim have shown that you can still do a mix between practical sets and effects and big CG, so hopefully they follow that philosophy in the ID4 sequel.
This one is a long shot, and maybe more suited for a third movie, but how about a new Alien race (in addition to the locusts)? For example, another alien race shows up recognizing that humanity fought off the locusts once before and joins up with the humans to fight a bigger threat in the third movie. Would definitely make things more epic and avoid the trilogy from becoming just rehashes of the original.
