No one can mention the new Star Wars movies or the Rebels animated series these days without some troll coming in and making what amounts to a “LOL Disney” comment. Basically they do drive-by comments dismissing anything Star Wars because of their lopsided belief that Disney is going to make Han Solo dance and sing because they are Disney. These people completely block out that Disney did not do that when they bought Marvel, and in fact Marvel has been better than ever since they were purchased by Disney years before Lucasfilm joined the fold.
As misguided as these people are, they are fueling a fear of “Disneyfication” when it comes to Star Wars. JJ Abrams was recently on the Travis Smiley Show on PBS and Comic Book Therapy captured this quote where he directly addresses the “Disneyfication” fears:
The beauty there is Disney doesn’t want that. They are well aware of this and they are very careful to make sure that…they are sensitive to that. They don’t want that at all, that’s the last thing they want. But that company, which is Marvel, they have…it’s incredible the scale of that company. They are as aware of that as anyone.
We’ve addressed this in the past, why Disney buying Lucasfilm was actually a good thing, and Abrams’ comments just back up the truth. Disney doesn’t interfere where they’re not needed. Pixar, Marvel, and Lucasfilm are allowed to operate independently and do what they do best. Disney purchased them for the product they were already producing, not to change or mold them into something they aren’t. On the flipside, as they are part of the larger Disney ecosystem, they can benefit from the larger creative pool they’re part of.
Will Abrams’ comments about this quiet the drive-by trolls making snarky comments? Probably not, as people always want to have something to complain about. But for those who had a more realistic perspective on the whole thing, his comments should be re-assuring.
