If you frequent Twitter, you may be seeing a bunch of tweets from people freaking out over a story about how Triceratops never existed.
This is coming from a story on The National Post that was updated today, but originally posted three years ago in August of 2010. New Scientist originated the story back in 2010. The story is that Triceratops was actually a younger version of Torosaurus, but it doesn’t really matter as all versions of Torosaurus are now re-classified as Triceratops.
That’s not what the big deal is. Today’s internet freak out is yet another example of someone finding some old story online, spreading it around, and then laugh as the ancient news goes viral. Recent examples of this include Virgin Airline’s April Fools joke about the glass bottomed plane, and last year’s passing of Neil Armstrong that people spread around on Facebook this year.
So the lesson here is prior to freaking out on the Internet, check the date of the story you’re reading…
