We’ve talked about how much the SyFy Channel sucks in the past. In fact, we’ve given you 10 Reasons Why the SyFy Channel Sucks. But in the last few years it’s become very apparent that other channels on cable have picked up the “SciFi” mantle and are delivering better content than SyFy has in nearly twenty years. So if you haven’t yet cut the cord, here are five cable channels that are more “SciFi” than SyFy:
From Doctor Who to other “Supernatural Saturday” imports such as Atlantis and the original Being Human not to mention Star Trek: TNG re-runs, BBC America is a better SciFi channel than SyFy has been in years. SyFy tries to compete by importing second-rate Canadian series such as Lost Girl and Bitten to try to attract the cheap genre romance novel crowd, and the series tend to end up just as low-rent as their original movies. If you’re a science fiction fan, BBC America should be your first stop on the channel guide.
The Science Channel
Not long ago, The Science Channel saw that the SyFy Channel wasn’t fulfilling its promise to fans of the genre and sprung into action. While the channel does some awesome science shows such as Through the Wormhole and Futurescape, they’ve also become the cable home to Firefly, Fringe, and science-fiction reality shows such as Prophets of Science Fiction and Trek Nation.
The History Channel
SyFy tries to do “paranormal” stuff, but it ends up as shit like Ghost Hunters, Ghost Mine, and Paranormal Witness. History Channel has them beat by a mile thanks to Ancient Aliens and repeats of UFO Hunters. If you’re into aliens, the History Channel is now the Alien channel. In the past they called it the Nazi channel because of all the WWII stuff, but that’s been moved to the Military Channel in favor of Ancient Aliens!
I kind of find it hilarious that the first thing the SyFy Channel ever aired when it began in the 90s was Star Wars. These days, if you’re a Star Wars fan you probably know how often Spike does all-weekend marathons of both the Prequel and Original Trilogies. Bitch all you want about them being the 2004 DVD editions, but the channel shows Star Wars so often it shames SyFy in doing so.
Obviously AMC is included here for The Walking Dead, but they also show a lot of scifi movies and even devote entire weeks to a theme scifi fans would enjoy. Superhero movies are very common on the channel, and as long as The Walking Dead remains strong and that spin-off is on the way the channel will remain to be the superior destination for scifi fans looking for a good genre movie on a Saturday night.
