Sideshow’s McQuarrie Stormtrooper Statue Brings Out Star Wars Ignorance

Star Wars fans will recognize that above piece of concept art. It’s one of Raph McQuarrie’s famous pieces showing his ideas for Stormtroopers in the original Star Wars, back when they wielded lightsabers and even shields.

Today Sideshow Toy began to tease their upcoming Premium Format figure of the Ralph McQuarrie Stormtrooper and while longtime Star Wars fans recognize it for what it is, that didn’t stop the Internet from believing they’ve seen a leak from The Force Awakens…

Hitfix:

Yes, McQuarrie has used stormtroopers with lightsabers in the past. But all that has been regulated the realm of “Legends” since the merger with Disney. With “The Force Awakens” and “Star Wars Rebels” making headway into the new official lore, would Lucasfilm put out Expanded Universe statues?

NOTE: The Ralph McQuarrie concept art is NOT considered “Legends” status. Star Wars Rebels uses it heavily, and there are a lot of things in The Force Awakens that draw from it as well.

SyFy Channel’s Blastr:

We knew J.J. Abrams was going back to the beginning with some of Ralph McQuarrie’s original designs and sketches to hone the look of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and this first look at a new collectible is the perfect mashup of new and old — along with what could be an intriguing story-related detail.

Cinemablend:

But now puzzle pieces may be all starting to fall into place. Something else to point out, though, is that the helmet on this Trooper does not match up with the ones seen in the trailer. Now, perhaps Finn switches helmets at one point or another – but he is presumed to be that shorter soldier seen standing in line with all the others.

The helmet doesn’t match up with the Episode VII trailer because this upcoming statue has absolutely nothing to do with The Force Awakens! If Hasbro won’t even show the action figures from the movie at Toy Fair in New York, there’s absolutely no way Sideshow would tease a Force Awakens statue this early. No, this is just statue based on Ralph McQuarrie concept art.
