Owen Wilson’s line from Armageddon “Have you even seen Star Wars?” could probably be modified today to say “Return of the Jedi” as a lot of people are searching Google for information on Bothan spies in Rogue One.
Google Trends over the past week shows a big spike in searches asking about Bothan Spies in Rogue One, when Return of the Jedi makes it very clear that Bothans were involved with the second Death Star, not the first.
In fact, Mon Mothma’s dialog in Return of the Jedi hints that the Bothans didn’t even bring them the plans to the Death Star, but rather its location and the fact that Palpatine was there:
“The data brought to us by the Bothan spies pinpoints the exact location of the Emperor’s new battle station. We also know that the weapon systems of this Death Star are not yet operational. With the Imperial Fleet spread throughout the galaxy in a vain effort to engage us, it is relatively unprotected. But most important of all, we’ve learned that the Emperor himself is personally overseeing the final stages of the construction of this Death Star.”
The Rebellion theoretically wouldn’t need to steal Death Star plans a second time, as both would work the same. But the Empire would’ve obviously patched up that annoying exhaust port flaw which is why the Rebellion attacked while it was still under construction so they could fly inside the super structure and blow up the reactor directly.
