Over the last couple weeks, following Carrie Fisher’s passing, some people have been trying to use her joking about Han’s funeral as evidence of how Episode VIII would begin. We’ve known for nearly a year that it’ll pick up right where the last movie left off, a first for Star Wars, and now there’s another confirmation of that.
USA Today has some quotes from Rian Johnson about Episode VIII, and he again confirms it’ll pick up right where The Force Awakens left off:
“I don’t want to skip ahead two years,” Johnson says. “I want to see the very next moment of what happens.”
He also confirms we’ll be spending a lot of time with Luke and finding out why he went into hiding, but Rey will also have a big part:
“but part of what’s she’s dealing with is the realization that she has this power and this gift,” Johnson adds. “She’s taking her first step to coming to terms with this thing inside her that she never knew was there and is just starting to reveal its potential.”
We’re likely to get the official title for Episode VIII soon. Disney’s Annual Meeting is March 8 in Denver, and it’s possible that Iger will reveal the title there much like he did with Rogue One. If we don’t get it then, we’ll get the title on April 13th along with the first teaser trailer on the first day of Star Wars Celebration in Orlando.
