Star Wars fans have known for a while that Rian Johnson had some kind of input into the final version of The Force Awakens, but until now it’s been a mystery.
Today Entertainment Weekly revealed exactly what he requested JJ Abrams change in the movie:
“Yes … The big [favor] was, I asked if R2 could come with Rey, and if BB-8 could stay behind with the Resistance,” Johnson says. “Originally it was BB-8 who went with Rey, which makes sense for the story in a way. But I asked, ‘Can you do me this solid and switch the droids?’”
It’s a very smart change to ask for as apparently Luke has a very emotional reunion with Artoo and Chewie on Ahch-to in The Last Jedi, something that wouldn’t be there if it were BB-8 who came with Rey.
