Normally the concept of fancasting is more annoying than cool. Just ask all the people who basically demanded that Katee Sackhoff be Captain Marvel over the last few years. But in the case of Doctor Aphra, they’ve made a pretty brilliant choice.
The name flying around Star Wars fans online recently is Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s Chloe Bennet, and I think that’s a perfect choice if Lucasfilm decides to put Aphra in a live-action movie. And based on the popularity of the character, that’s almost an inevitability.
Doctor Aphra was created by Keiron Gillen in the really great twenty-five issue run of Darth Vader. She’s since been spun off into her own solo comic series and is currently crossing over with the Star Wars on-going in an event right now. She also won the Hasbro Fan’s Choice poll to be made into an action figure, and she’s also in a recent Star Wars mobile game.
So when Lucasfilm decides to move Aphra into live action, the fancasted idea of Chloe Bennet is definitely one to look at. She looks the part, and she already has been in the “Disney family” with her ties to Marvel.
And with rumors of the fifth season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. being the last, there’s an opening there for her to become Doctor Aphra. A standalone focusing on her that’s set between Empire and Jedi would be pretty cool…
