The first trailer for Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom dropped last night during the Thursday Night Football game. It is the sequel to Jurassic World and the next segment in the Jurassic Park franchise.

It sounds like Chris Pratt’s character, Owen Grady, finds out from his ex gf, Claire (Bryce Dallas Howard), that a volcano is about to wipe out life for Isla Nublar, the island that housed both Jurassic Park and Jurassic World. Obviously good guy Owen decides to go help the “poor” dinosaurs and specifically his BFF Blue. We also see a glimpse of Dr. Henry Wu (BD Wong), who was instrumental in InGen’s initial cloning back in JP1 and then turned a little more sinister when working for Masrani creating customized dinosaurs for Jurassic World. I was happy to see that Jeff Goldblum is back, even though it kinda sounds like he’s testifying against saving the dinosaurs. Unfortunately, the trailer didn’t show that he had much of a role beyond the trial and I doubt he makes the journey to the island.

Something I always look forward to the most is to see the new type of T-rex/Raptor-caliber dinosaur that they decide to introduce. Here’s a look back at the notables from the old flicks:

Jurassic Park: the T-Rex, slight glimpse of raptor when it eats that cow

Lost World: Raptors, Duo T-rex’s

Jurassic Park 3: Spinosaurus, Pteranodon

Jurassic World: Indominus rex, “Domesticated” Raptors, Mosasaurus

This time around we see…. Drum roll please…: the Baryonyx. At first glance it looks like a smaller T-Rex that has an enormous  bite and is probably most similar to the Spinosaurus from JP3. We also see a dinosaur called a Carnotaurus, which again is much smaller than a T-Rex BUT it has horns and looks pretty intimidating.

The plot reminds me a lot of ‘The Lost World’ in the sense that the island was deserted except for the dinosaurs and now they’re going back for a specific mission with a large force of mercenaries and scientists. While I’m pumped to see this one, I don’t know if I’m AS excited for the “race against the clock” premise of this movie as I am for the traditional: “let’s go to a ‘safe’ fun park and ‘uh oh’ we underestimated the dinosaurs (again)”. Overall, the movie seems very action packed and suspenseful and it will probably be a no-brainer, IMO, to go see this bad boy in theaters come June 2018.
