We haven’t done one of these for a few weeks because frankly, there haven’t been any worthy Blu-Rays to let you know about. Yes, there was Green Lantern: Emerald Knights but aside from that; it’s been pretty dry for us geeks lately. That all changes this week. The Lord of the Rings Extended Editions finally arrive on Blu-Ray along with Zack Snyder’s Director’s Cut of Sucker Punch.
The fifteen disc set includes the three Extended Editions on six Blu-Ray discs, and the special features from the previous releases on the remaining DVDs. You get all of the documentaries from the original Extended Edition releases, as well as the Costa Botes documentaries from the Limited Edition release. There are also digital copies of each Extended Edition that you can download to iTunes or Windows Media Player. Amazon currently has the set for just $69.99, which is $50 off the retail price.
Sucker Punch Director’s Cut
The story of Zack Snyder’s attempt to bring a PG-13 Sucker Punch to the screen is quickly becoming a legend online. Apparently Snyder had to cut the film multiple times before the MPAA would grant him a PG-13, and even after they did they demanded even more cuts to the movie! The original theatrical cut was 101 minutes, and the Director’s Cut is reportedly 128 minutes, so a lot has been restored.
Serenity & The Last Starfighter
Both of these have been available on Blu-Ray for a while now, however this week Universal has begun re-releasing some of their catalog titles in Blu-Ray/DVD combo packs with a Digital Copy. So if you want a portable version on your smartphone or tablet and an extra DVD copy, Serenity is going for about $12.50 and The Last Starfighter is under $10.
