There’s a strange group of Star Wars fans online who believe that just because George Lucas is “retired” and sold Lucasfilm to Disney he has zero connection now to the company that bears his name. These are also likely the same group of “fans” who believe “The People vs George Lucas” is the pinnacle of documentary filmmaking, and truly believe that Lucas raped their childhood.
Unfortunately for them, they’re living in a dream world. According to Jett Lucas, his father has been involved with things after his retirement despite the wishes of some snarky kids online. He sat in on story meetings for The Force Awakens, and JJ Abrams would call Lucas with story questions as well. Now it’s been revealed that Lucas has written a new movie for Lucasfilm, but it’s not one of the Star Wars films.
Today Lucasfilm announced that the long-rumored fairy CG short film will be released on January 23, 2015. It’s written by George Lucas, and (as rumored) directed by Gary Rydstrom:
“Strange Magic†is a madcap fairy tale musical inspired by “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.†Popular songs from the past six decades help tell the tale of a colorful cast of goblins, elves, fairies and imps, and their hilarious misadventures sparked by the battle over a powerful potion. Lucasfilm Animation Singapore and Industrial Light & Magic, which created the CGI animation for 2011’s Academy Award®-winning film “Rango,†bring to life the fanciful forest turned upside down with world-class animation and visual effects.
This “fairy movie” has been hinted at for a long time, and when “Strange Magic” was first leaked people actually believed it was a sequel to “Frozen”.
