Things are starting to pick up with the Deadpool production, as the movie is going to come out early next year. We’ve seen a tease of the comic-faithful costume, and now it sounds like casting is starting to pick up.
Comic Book Movie found some casting information (that has since been deleted from the source), and Badass Digest chimes in with some speculation that the “three series commitment” in the descriptions could lead to bigger things:
We know that Gina Carano is playing Angel Dust, a member of the Morlocks, a sewer-dwelling tribe of mutants. If the guess that Keren is Angel Dust is right, that means the character is locked in for more series… which means the Morlocks could be showing up in a future X-Men film. Or, get this: what if Fox is thinking of spinning off the Morlocks into their own movie? What if they think these characters and their setting make for a different enough aesthetic to warrant exploring further?
I’d prefer that Fox open the universe up in other directions – bring me the Starjammers – but I’ve always had a soft spot for the Morlocks. I like that they’re the true underdogs that show up the X-Men to be kind of privilged whiners. A Morlocks movie could be a really interesting take on intersectional politics in the world of social justice.
He mentions Starjammers there, and it would make a lot of sense for Fox to bring them in. That could be their mutant answer to Marvel’s cosmic movies. Just keep the look of everything as close to the comics as Deadpool is, and mutant fans could be in for a treat over the next few years.
