The third and fourth Avengers movies will be filmed in a scale matching their cosmic story as the Infinity War will be fully IMAX.
IMAX made the announcement today, saying that both parts of Avengers: Infinity War will be filmed with the new 2D IMAX/ARRI camera the Alexa 65. The two movies will be the first Hollywood theatrical releases to be filmed entirely in the IMAX format.
As they’re being filmed with a 2D camera, that means any 3D version will be post-converted. Some people are freaking out over this, but the truth is most 3D movies these days are post converted. It’s simply cheaper to do a post-conversion as opposed to using 3D cameras, so studios are opting for that now. Most of the time the modern 3D conversions are done pretty well, as the awesome job on The Force Awakens trailer shows.
In addition to Avengers: Infinity War being filmed entirely in IMAX, the Russo Bros. will be using the Alexa 65 camera to shoot some of the big action sequences in Captain America: Civil War, which is out in just one year.
