The summer convention season is coming to a close, but there’s still the 2015 D23 Expo and there are some good reasons to be excited for it. Unlike San Diego Comic Con or other conventions that take place every year, Disney’s D23 Expo is every other year. That means they usually show some pretty big things and even show stuff that’s very early in development as by the time the next convention rolls around those things will be closer to release.
The 2015 D23 Expo is expected to be a very impressive one, especially since the D23 Stage now holds more people than even the legendary Hall H at SDCC. That means there are some big reasons to get excited:
Star Wars: Rogue One
Even more than The Force Awakens in December, many Star Wars fans are expecting Lucasfilm to come out in force with Rogue One. The studio is forbidden to discuss the movie until Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation releases on July 31st, and D23 Expo is the first convention after that date. That means Disney could make some official casting announcements, and maybe even officially release the Celebration teaser for the movie.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens
Despite the crowd-pleasing panel at San Diego Comic Con, they won’t be ignoring The Force Awakens at D23 Expo. What they’ll actually show is up in the air, however. Will they show the SDCC Behind the Scenes clip again, despite it being officially available on YouTube? That’s doubtful and they’ll probably want to bring something most of the 7,500 people in Hall D23 haven’t seen yet. Will it be a new trailer? Well, Fall isn’t too far away and D23 Expo is only a couple weeks before “Force Friday”, so anything’s possible..
At the 2013 D23 Expo the parks and resorts side of things was inbetween projects. They had just finished New Fantasyland in Florida, and the Disneyland Resort saw new additions such as World of Color and the new Star Tours. 2015 is a different story, so we’re probably going to see some Avatar stuff, and maybe official confirmation of the rumored Star Wars and Marvel additions to Disneyland. We’re also probably going to get better looks at the Shanghai Disneyland stuff, which does include the “Star Wars Launch Pad” attraction that includes The Force Awakens costumes and props.
Marvel skipped SDCC this year, which honestly wasn’t a surprise due to D23 Expo happening a month later, and we’re likely to see some cool stuff there. With Civil War well into filming, it’s possible we may get the first look of footage from it there. We’ve already seen one clip, the after-credits stinger in Ant Man is actually from Civil War. Big crowd pleasing moments could include possibilities such as bringing out the new Spider-Man, Tom Holland, or even having Benedict Cumberbatch appear to talk about the upcoming Doctor Strange.
For Star Wars fans attending D23 Expo, they won’t want to miss the Disney Legends ceremony first thing on the first day (Thursday). George Lucas himself will be inducted into the Disney Hall of Fame as a Legend, and that will be something Star Wars fans will definitely want to see. If you’ve never seen The Maker in person, this would be the first panel to camp out for.
