At the tail end of this morning’s Walt Disney Studios Live Action presentation at D23 Expo, CEO Bob Iger brought the house down by officially announcing Star Wars Land for Disneyland and Walt Disney World!
The fourteen acre expansion will be the largest “Land” add-on to Disneyland ever and will be designed after a starport on some far alien world. It’ll be a fully immersive environment where Cast Members will play parts of Star Wars aliens and other characters to fill in the theme of a bustling Star Wars world.
Examples of areas given include a full Cantina, including familiar droids. Concept art of this was shown, but not released, and it looked pretty great.
Of course what everyone wants is new attractions and Star Wars Land will feature two big rides, and one will be hugely popular. That one will allow park guests to become the pilot of the most famous ship in the Star Wars galaxy, the Millennium Falcon:
Concept art for the other ride was shown and it’s some kind of experience where you’re put into the middle of a battle against the First Order. That will likely be some kind of very advanced dark ride, perhaps the rumored trackless system such as they have at Tokyo Disneyland for the insanely popular Winnie the Pooh Honey Hunt ride.
Iger won the crowd by announcing that they’ll be building two Star Wars Lands. One will go in Disney’s Hollywood Studios park in Florida and the other will be built in Disneyland in Anaheim. No date was mentioned for a possible opening, but most people don’t expect them until at least 2018.
