There’s one incredibly annoying theory about The Force Awakens that just won’t die, and it has to do with Rey’s staff in the movie.
One group of people are convinced that it’s Darth Plagueis’ staff and Rey will end up possessed by the Sith Lord for holding it. That’s not it. Others truly believe it serves some major purpose in the movie because of the focus of the staff in the marketing with Rey. That’s not it either.
Rey’s staff is simply a common tool used by scavengers on Jakku to assist them when climbing among the many ruined ships and structures on the planet. Here’s another one that isn’t Rey:
Just like all the marketing showing Finn using the Skywalker lightsaber, focusing on Rey is also a bit of misdirection to hide what happens at the end of the movie and the character’s story arc.
WARNING: BEYOND THIS POINT IS A MAJOR SPOILER FOR THE FORCE AWAKENS AS IT DEALS WITH THE FINAL SCENES OF THE MOVIE. DO NOT READ ANY FURTHER IF YOU DO NOT WANT THE ENDING OF THE FORCE AWAKENS SPOILED FOR YOU.
With that warning out of the way, Rey doesn’t end The Force Awakens with her staff. Her destiny lies with a different weapon.
During his fight with Kylo Ren, Finn ends up pretty messed up. Rey then accepts her destiny by picking up the Skywalker lightsaber she didn’t want anything to do with earlier in the movie and finishes the fight with Kylo. The shot in the latest trailer of her crying is her with Finn as Chewie shows up in the Falcon to rescue them and take them back to the Resistance base:
From there, after a series of goodbyes to Finn, Poe, and Leia she takes the Skywalker lightsaber with her and flies in the Falcon with Chewie to meet up with Luke Skywalker and accept her destiny to be trained as a Jedi.
That means she’ll be using the blue Skywalker saber in Episode VIII.
