One of the biggest things some Star Wars fans had for supporting one of their crazy Force Awakens conspiracy theories (Plagueis, anyone?) was that “JJ Abrams lied about Khan”. Even though Abrams admitted in an MTV interview after the movie he may have done that differently, these conspiracy theorists didn’t want to hear it because the Khan deception helped them believe whatever headcanon they had for the new Star Wars movie.
In an interview with Buzzfeed, Abrams again addressed the Khan issue after Damon Lindelof recently admitted it was wrong:
“Abrams laughed while talking about it now: “At the end of the day, while I agree with Damon Lindelof that withholding the Khan thing ended up seeming like we were lying to people, I was trying to preserve the fun for the audience, and not just tell them something that the characters don’t learn for 45 minutes into the movie, so the audience wouldn’t be so ahead of it.â€
(He added: “But it was Simon Pegg who lied outright, and I adore him for doing so. I remember when I read that he basically said, ‘He doesn’t play Khan,’ and I thought, Oh my god, Simon Pegg!â€)”
As people can now see with The Force Awakens, there really wasn’t a Khan style deception in the movie. Things were hidden and there was some slight misdirection thanks to the US marketing, but nothing as big as Khan.
