It’s always sad when a MMO shuts down, but it’s even worse when it’s a good game like PlanetSide.
Daybreak games (formerly SOE) has announced that the original PlanetSide will be going offline forever on July 1st:
“On July 1st, at 4:00 PM PT, we will be closing the PlanetSide 1 server. PlanetSide 1 has a very important history with Daybreak Games and a special place in the hearts of those who work on its successor. While we have run the game for free since 2014, due to evolving business needs and technical requirements it has become necessary to conclude this service.”
The original PlanetSide launched in 2003 and was the first real persistent-world FPS. Its sequel launched just a few years ago and is currently playable on the PC and PS4 with an Xbox One version coming soon. In addition to PlanetSide, Daybreak is also shutting down the Legends of Norrath card game that was connected to EverQuest and EverQuest II.
Recently Daybreak cancelled EverQuest Next and then made Landmark (which was initially called EverQuest Next Landmark) its own standalone Minecraft-style building game. They also put DC Universe Online on the Xbox One.
Hopefully EverQuest, EverQuest II, and their remaining games continue on.
