Three years ago when Star Trek Into Darkness was releasing, JJ Abrams and his cast went around pushing a deception that Benedict Cumberbatch was playing “John Harrison” and not Khan. Every Star Trek fan saw through that deception, and Abrams has had to live with that shadow over every statement he made about The Force Awakens leading up to its release. “Abrams lied” as a rallying cry for those who refused to believe that Luke wasn’t in the movie until the end.
Now it looks like Paramount is avoiding anything like that with Star Trek Beyond, as they have spoiled one of the huge twists in the movie with a recent TV spot.
IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO BE SPOILED ABOUT STAR TREK BEYOND DO NOT READ ANY FURTHER!
The TV Spot reveals the origin of Idris Elba’s villain Krall. In all the trailers so far, he looked alien, but in the TV Spot he’s human:
The explanation for this is Krall was the captain of the USS Franklin, a veteran of the Xindi war (from Enterprise). The planet the Franklin crashed on had an alien civilization that could expand the human’s lives, so Krall took that technology and it made him look alien while making him live long enough to be the villain in Star Trek Beyond.
It’s a pretty major revelation to expose in a TV spot, but it’s clear Paramount wanted people to know that Idris Elba was in the movie as it’s difficult to tell that under all of the alien make-up.
