A few weeks ago everyone was running stories claiming that Adam Driver compared Episode 8 to The Empire Strikes Back. As it’s the second chapter in a three act story, of course it’s going to have a different tone than The Force Awakens. But that didn’t stop people from making sensationalist stories about how dark and gritty Episode 8 would be.
Now in Vanity Fair, Driver clarified his comparison:
“No, no, and that’s not even what I said. What I said was the tone of it was different, I didn’t say that it was gonna be in the vein of [it]—I was using it as an example, so poor example,“ he clarified. â€Next time I should say—I’m trying to think of another sequel to a movie that’s good. When I read the script, it was not what I expected, in the best of ways.â€
Since Episode 8 is written and directed by someone other than JJ Abrams, it naturally would have a different tone than The Force Awakens. That doesn’t automatically mean a bunch of people will die and limbs will be severed just because it’s the second movie in the trilogy…
