Here’s some big news for Rogue One that poses an interesting question about its future home video release. Today it was revealed that Rogue One will release in AMC’s Dolby Cinema locations.
There’s only a couple of these theaters in the US, but what they do is present the movie with a HDR (High Dynamic Range) presentation via Dolby Vision with Dolby Atmos audio. There are currently two HDR “standards” that 4K HDR TVs can use. The most common is HDR10, but Dolby Vision does exist on some sets.
With Rogue One being presented in Dolby Vision HDR with Dolby Atmos, and the movie itself filmed with an Alexa 6K camera, that means that a nice 4K HDR release on UHD Blu-Ray could be a real possibility someday. The only problem is that Disney hasn’t yet jumped on board the UHD Blu-Ray train. Perhaps a 4K HDR release of Rogue One could be what they kick off their support with.
