Frank Herbert’s science fiction classic will be returning to the big screen with a big name behind the camera as Legendary Pictures has signed Denis Villeneuve to direct Dune!
The director of this year’s Best Picture nominee Arrival was said to be in talks to direct Dune not long ago, but last night Brian Herbert (co-author of the current Dune books and Frank Herbert’s son) confirmed on Twitter that he’s now been signed to direct the series:
It's official — Legendary Pictures has signed the very talented Denis Villeneuve to direct the exciting new DUNE series film project.

The series comment is interesting as he makes it sound as if Villeneuve will be involved with multiple movies. Legendary has the film and TV rights for Dune, and ideally they should do a trilogy featuring Paul and then leave the books about his son to the television series in a Game of Thrones style. Herbert’s Dune is basically The Lord of the Rings of science fiction, so the project deserves the same reverence that Jackson gave Tolkien. Hopefully we get an amazing adaptation out of this.
